  49. This version is primarily intended for users of Microsoft(R) Windows(R)
  50. 3.1/3.11 and Windows for Workgroups 3.1/3.11 who are connected to a 
  51. local area network (LAN) or who have existing Internet connections (people 
  52. who have an existing TCP/IP connection, a dialer, and an account with an
  53. Internet service provider).

  55. Note that this version is a 16-bit program and therefore you do not need
  56. to have Win32s(R) installed on your computer.

  58. If you are using Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT(R), you can download 
  59. a version designed and optimized for these platforms at:

  62. This product enables you to browse and view HTML documents on the network, 
  63. in addition to documents on the World Wide Web or Internet,
  64. provided your network is connected to the Internet or provided you
  65. have an existing TCP/IP connection. Other services, 
  66. such as Gopher and FTP and NNTP news support, are also available.

  82. - A personal computer, 386 processor or higher
  83. - Microsoft Windows 3.1 or 3.11 or 
  84.   Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.1 or 3.11
  85. - At least 4 megabytes (MB) of memory
  86. - A VGA monitor or better
  87. - A mouse
  88. - A modem with a speed of at least 9600 or a LAN 
  89.   connection
  90. - TCP/IP Stack & Dialer

  92. Important 
  93. * A TCP/IP network protocol stack and a dialer (often
  94.   referred to as Winsock.dll) are required to access the Internet
  95.   through an Internet service provider (ISP). As mentioned above, this 
  96.   version of Internet Explorer requires that these components be 
  97.   installed before running Internet Explorer.

  99. If you are accessing the Internet through a LAN or just browsing your
  100. internal network (intranet), your network administrator can provide you
  101. with the appropriate version of Winsock.dll.

  105. INSTALLING MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER

  108. Installing from the Internet
  109. ----------------------------
  110.  
  111. To install Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Internet, carry out 
  112. the following procedure.
  113.  
  114. 1. Create a temporary directory on your computer.
  115. 2. Choose to download Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Internet, 
  116.    and save the file Dlmini21.exe to the temporary directory.
  117. 3. In File Manager, run Dlmini21.exe to extract the program files.
  118. 4. Read the instructions below for LAN installations and for installing
  119.    with existing TCP/IP connections.
  120. 5. In File Manager, run Setup.exe. Setup installs files in the 
  121.    directory you specify.
  122.  
  123.    NOTE
  124.    If you are upgrading to a newer version of Internet Explorer and
  125.    choose to install the program in a different directory from your
  126.    original version, please refer to the following section, "Upgrading 
  127.    over Version 2.01," for further instructions.

  129. 6. If you want, you can delete the temporary directory you created.
  130. 7. Run Internet Explorer.

  133. Upgrading over Version 2.01
  134. When upgrading to a newer version Internet Explorer, you can choose to
  135. install the program into the same directory as your previous version 
  136. or establish another directory. If you choose the former, your previous 
  137. dialer settings and connection(s) will be preserved. However, if you choose
  138. the latter, you must do the following in order to use your pre-existing dialer 
  139. settings and connection(s):
  140.  
  141.   1. If you install to a new directory, but keep your existing 
  142.   program group, you must change the properties of any dialer 
  143.   program item(s) you previously created so that the 
  144.   Command Line and Working Directory settings point to the appropriate
  145.   directories. (Note that the New Connections program item does not 
  146.   need to be modified.) You do this by clicking the dialer program item,
  147.   choosing Properties from the File menu, and replacing all references 
  148.   to the existing directory with the name of new directory. For example, 
  149.   if you install an upgrade of Internet Explorer to a new directory named
  150.   NEWEXPL, the following change would be required:
  151.  
  152.     Command Line: C:\IEXPLORE\iedial.exe C:\IEXPLORE\CON0000.CON
  153.     Working Directory: C:\IEXPLORE
  154.  
  155.     Changes to:
  156.  
  157.     Command Line: C:\NEWEXPL\iedial.exe C:\NEWEXPL\CON0000.CON
  158.     Working Directory: C:\NEWEXPL

  160.   2. Using File Manager, copy all files with the extension .CON
  161.   from the previous directory to the new created directory.
  162.  
  163.   3. If during the upgrade you choose to use a new program group,
  164.   just follow Step 2 and copy the old dialer program items to the new 
  165.   program group. Repeat Step 1 to change the Command Line and Working
  166.   Directory settings.

  169. Upgrading over Version 1.5 and Version 1.6 Beta
  170. If you are upgrading from the version 1.5 or version 1.6 beta, please 
  171. read the following special notes.
  172.  
  173. - The format of Iexplore.ini has changed, so Setup will make a backup
  174.   copy of your current Iexplore.ini file to a file called Ie16ini.sav.
  175. - You will need to reapply any user-selectable settings, such as proxy 
  176.   servers, in the new version.
  177. - Your Favorites and History lists will be preserved.
  178. - Win32s is not required for this version, so if you installed Win32s 
  179.   specifically to run the version 1.6 beta, then you can remove it from
  180.   your system. Please refer to the following URL for instructions on

  185. LAN Installations
  186. -----------------

  188. After completing the steps outlined above, you should be ready to use 
  189. Microsoft Internet Explorer over your LAN. You will be able to use 
  190. Internet Explorer to browse the Internet. (If you are not sure whether 
  191. you currently have access, consult your network administrator.)
  192.  
  193. If you have access, your LAN administrator should provide you with 
  194. proxy servers that also can be used.
  195.  
  196. To install Internet Explorer, you need to do the following:
  197.  
  198. - Make sure you have the TCP/IP protocol installed.
  199.  
  200. Proxy servers can also be used, provided they are CERN compliant.
  201. To enable use of a proxy server, choose Options from the View menu,
  202. and then on the Proxy tab, type the data needed for your proxy server.
  203.  
  204. Note: When using Novell's NetWare IP stack with Internet Explorer,
  205. please use the latest released version.  Older versions of the 
  206. NetWare stack may not work properly.

  209. Using Third-Party Telnet Helper Applications
  210. --------------------------------------------

  212. To configure Internet Explorer to use a Telnet helper application,
  213. open IEXPLORE.INI and locate the [Helpers] section. Remove the 
  214. semicolon from in front of the telnet= line, and type the path to 
  215. the telnet application. For example:
